St Michael in the willows, Llanfihangel Helygen

Llanyre, Llandrindod Wells LD1 6ED

The original construction is medieval with the church serving the local, but always sparse, agricultural population. The walls were largely rebuilt around 1812 but the beautiful oak trussed, braced and boarded roof structure is probably the original medieval. Box pew of various dates and styles predominate. There is a double pulpit and reading desk and the small ancient font, of circular design, may date from as early as the thirteenth century.

The church was restored in 1956 by the Pilgrim Trust, with further work in 1994. It is listed among the “top 100 churches”

The Church is usually open, and is a place of considerable interest and peace. The Churchwarden is always happy to open up or to speak with groups.
